Lee & Tiffany Lakosky–Appearing February 6-14

Husband and wife hunters, Lee and Tiffany Lakosky, are best known as stars of Getting’ Close–one of the highest-rated shows in outdoor television–and their newest show, The Crush with Lee & Tiffany.

“What can I say… people just love Lee and Tiffany,” says O’Hara.

In addition to being celebrities, the Lakoskys are very accomplished hunters. They spend countless hours sharpening their hunting skills and actively managing their land for trophy whitetails in eastern Iowa.

Many hunters recognize the couple from the widespread use of many of their trophy photos and magazine articles which have appeared in dozens of high profile publications and catalogs over the past few seasons.

Stan Potts–Appearing February 6-8

In 40 years of hunting, Stan Potts has harvested numerous whitetail bucks with a bow, three of which scored over 200 inches. He also took another 200 incher with a TC muzzleloader.

Potts gives hunting seminars all across North America and has been the subject of many feature magazine articles. His hunting successes have been featured in North American Whitetail magazine and several other media sources. He has appeared in several hunting videos and television shows, including Realtree Outdoors and Hunter’s Specialties Prime Time series. He is a co-host of North American Whitetail Television on the Outdoor Channel. He is also featured on Whitetail Country on ESPN and Hunt Masters on the Outdoor Channel. Pots hunts 100% wild whitetails on public and private property and is well known for his expertise in treestand placement and patterning bigger, mature bucks.

Ralph & Vicki Cianciarulo–Appearing February 6-9

Ralph and Vicki Cianciarulo, of Lanark, Illinois, are co-hosts of the award-winning Archer’s Choice and The Choice television shows.

Vicki Cianciarulo is credited with taking the largest wild white-tailed deer by a female on camera, with her Colorado buck scoring over 200 inches. She also has numerous black bear, caribou, moose, dall sheep, whitetail, mule deer, antelope, a turkey Grand Slam, and many different African species to her credit. Her history includes outfitting and guiding for both bear and deer, serving on conservation boards and editing and producing television shows.

Ralph Cianciarulo is a well-known international bowhunter, a noted videographer, a seminar speaker, and a TV personality for the Outdoor Channel.

“North America’s Favorite Hunting Couple,” the Cianciarulos have worked from the bottom up to earn a reputation that is second to none in the hunting industry.

Bob Clouser– Appearing February 12-13

Clouser’s love of the outdoors, especially fishing, led him into the fishing business. He continues to guide, teach and share his enjoyment with others. He will present casting demonstrations, using visual aids and casting weighted flies and lines, as well as lectures on “Fly Fishing for Smallmouth Bass” about catching smallmouth from top to bottom using flies and “Fly Fishing Adventures”, about various species that can be caught on fly rod and flies.

Clouser has received numerous awards for his strong conservation work including his induction into the national Fresh Water Fishing Hall of fame as Legendary Angler. In 2000, he was named National Angler of the Year by Fly Rod and Reel Magazine.

Mark Menendez– Appearing February 6-8

There are few bass fishing professionals on the national scene like Mark Menendez, who is currently ranked 17th in the world. On the water, the 44-year-old Paducah, Kentucky angler has spent the past 18 years earning the reputation of a warrior on tour. He finished fifth in the Angler-of-the-Year points, after winning the Lake Dardanelle tournament on the BASS Elite Series in 2009. His career earnings of more than $900,000 along with success in individual tournaments (three wins and 18 top-ten finishes) and season-long point standings are testament to his dedication and skill.

Menendez, who has fished the Bassmaster Tour since 1991, has held the record for the biggest bass, weighing 13-pounds, 9-ounces, ever caught in a bass tournament.

PA 3D Bowhunter Challenge
Presented by the PA 3-D Bowhunters, events include a Fun Shoot, as well as Individual and Progressive Pot Money Shoots. Qualifying rounds take place 6-14th, with finals beginning on Saturday, February 13th and continuing on Sunday, February 14th. Class winners and top 3 Progressive Pot Shooters each day are notified to return for the finals. Competition in 17 different classes is provided. Four person team shoot will be held during the individual qualifying rounds with the first score a shooter turns in used for the team score. Antler Scoring

Knife & Hawk Championship

Personal Assessment of product

Until coming across the Lansky Sharpening System, I was never able to put a sharp durable edge on my knives.  I’ve tried whetstones and though I could put a serviceable edge on my knife, it was never truly sharp.  I had friends, and family who were willing to sharpen my knives for me, but I was always bothered by not being able to do it myself.  I came across the Lansky Sharpening System from a co-worker.  He was telling me about his knife sharpening kit and offered to let me try one of my knives on it.  After receiving the kit and a few instructions from my friend, I gave it a shot.  I took the system home that evening and brought my dull hunting knife to a razor sharp edge on my first try.  This was the first time I was able to get a truly sharp edge on my hunting knife.  I was amazed at how easy this system was to use and purchased a Lansky that night.  After receiving my system in the mail, I had all my hunting knives honed and ready for the upcoming hunting season.  The great thing about this sharpening system is that it takes the “art” out of sharpening knives.  Just put your knife in the clamp, decide what angle you want on your blade, attach the rods to the hones, and use the slots built into the clamp to bring you knife to a razor sharp finish.  Though I already had an idea how to use the sharpening kit, the instructions were thorough and easy to follow.

Product Limitations

There are only a couple of things I could mention as “limitations” when using the Lansky Knife Sharpening Systems.  This system is used by running a hone over the knife as the fixed surface, as compared to running a knife over a whetstone as the fixed surface.  A little more care is needed when using the Lansky Sharpening System. The same friend, who introduced me to this kit, also cut himself bad when the hone slipped off the blade and ran his finger into the knife edge.  This is completely avoidable ,and the system is safe to use, but always use care when dealing with knives.  Also when doing large knives (above 6-7 inches) it is recommended to do ½ of the knife at a time.  When trying to sharpen the whole knife at once, the angle changes too much and the rods might not be long enough.  I have done our chef’s kitchen knife ½ at a time, and though it took a little longer, the end result was great.

Recommendation

The Lansky Sharpening System is easy to use and has brought out razor sharp edges on knives I have never been able to get sharp before.  The process of sharpening my knives before owning the Lansky Sharpening System had been frustrating and often times impossible.  After using this system, I believe this product would work great in any outdoorsmen’s home.

I would also like to tell everyone a very special story that happened to us a few days ago at the Clarion County Youth Field Day banquet.  Each year, Randy Culberson of Sportsman Outfitters and one of the organizers of the Clarion County Youth Field Day invites us to the annual event.  Initially I was not going to be able to attend the event due to a scheduled hunt that we were filming.  A phone call from the guide earlier in the week said he wanted to hold off that the birds just weren’t here yet.  So a phone call later and I was off to Clarion County for the banquet.

Some More Wired Fans!

At the banquet each year, Kyle Schwabenbauer, Co-Host Wired Outdoors, presents the highlight Youth Field Day video to all the guests.  This year, Randy asked if we could also show our Hunt of A Lifetime videos that we did the past year.  Once Kyle was done showing the highlight video I would be showing the Arianna video and Michael Ciarlone clip. (You can see both those videos at the bottom of this story)  Before showing the videos Randy informed me that since we weren’t quite ready to begin our fund raising for this year’s Hunt of A Lifetime kids, he had come up with an idea just hours before.  He purchased a small Christmas tree about three feet high and hung lottery tickets and a couple of gift certificates on the tree for decorations. He informed me that he was going to sell raffle tickets for the tree and donate all the money for our “Hunt Of A Lifetime” kids.  I was very thankful and expressed my gratitude because any money we can raise is always appreciated it, but really didn’t know what to expect.

Amy Shoup from Strattanville, PA won the Hunt of a Lifetime raffle. It was a live Christmas tree filled with lottery tickets, $100 gift cert, $50 savings bond and a Traditions muzzleloader. Congrats Amy!!

After showing the Arianna video and the Michael Ciarlone clips there were a lot of folks who I could tell were really touched by our work.  Shortly after the presentation, I had to get on the road as I had a 4 hour car ride and had to be at the airport the following morning to fly out to Illinois.  About an hour down the road, I get a text from Kyle saying, “An anonymous donor just said they would match any money raised for the Hunt of A Lifetime kids.” About another hour down the road I get a call from Kyle saying, “How much money do you think they just raised for our kids?”, I replied, “I have no idea, maybe $500?”  Kyle said, “Try $3600.00!”  I was floored.  There are not many times in my life where I don’t have something to say, I was truly speechless.  In a year, when the economy is so bad to have folks open their hearts and wallets like that was truly humbling.

Clarion County Sportsmen for Youth raised over $3600 for Hunt of a Lifetime in less than two hours at their banquet. CCSFY President, Eric Black, presents Kyle with the money!! Thanks guys for everything!!!

I have so many things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving and they just keep rolling in.  I would like to thank all the folks from the banquet who purchased tickets, to the anonymous donor, Randy Culberson and all the CCSFY committee members and the list goes on. Thank you again, I can’t say it enough and I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!!!

“Elk are one of North America’s premier big game animals,” Roe said. “Pennsylvania is privileged to offer this unique hunting opportunity, a product of successful wildlife management that helps to finance wildlife conservation and supports Pennsylvania’s rich hunting heritage. It’s an unparalleled experience for hunters, particularly those who can’t afford to go on an expensive one- or two-week guided elk hunt out West.

“This year’s overall success rate was 73 percent, which is down slightly from the past year, which I believe that this can be attributed to the improved food conditions this year throughout the elk range, thanks in large part to the decline in gypsy moth defoliation.”

Along with extracting samples needed for disease testing, the agency also collected samples necessary to examine food preferences and habitat use by elk. Also, hunters collected liver samples that will be evaluated for mineral contents.

The largest antlered elk was taken by Reed Bamburger, of Graysville, Greene County. He took a 652-pound (dressed weight), 8×9 on Nov. 2, in Covington Township, Clearfield County.

Those hunters rounding out the top five heaviest antlered elk harvested, were: Lisa Banasick, of Connellsville, Fayette County, took a 643-pound, 9×11 on Nov. 5, in Gibson Township, Cameron County; Ronald Werkheiser Jr., of Hellertown, Northampton County, took a 617-pound, 7×7 on Nov. 4, in Karthaus Township, Clearfield County; Kenneth E. Hunter, of Muncy, Lycoming County, took a 604-pound, 8×8 on Nov. 3, in Jay Township, Elk County; and Alvin Hubler, of Munson, Clearfield County, took a 589-pound, 6×7 on Nov. 3, in Benezette Township, Elk County.

The heaviest antlerless elk was taken by Larry Davis, of Fairborn, Ohio, who harvested a 474-pound (dressed weight) antlerless elk on Nov. 3, in Benezette Township, Elk County.

Those hunters rounding out the top five heaviest antlerless elk harvested were: Gary Weikert, of Arendtsville, Adams County, who harvested a 444-pound antlerless elk on Nov. 4, in Covington Township, Clearfield County; Randolph Maus, of Halifax, Dauphin County, who harvested a 413-pound antlerless elk on Nov. 5, in Gibson Township, Cameron County; Ronald VanDyke, of Harrisville, Butler County, who harvested a 403-pound antlerless elk on Nov. 2, in Gibson Township, Cameron County; Scott Hite, of Port Republic, Maryland, who harvested a 398-pound antlerless elk on Nov. 5, in Gibson Township, Cameron County; and Adam Palyo, of Jefferson Hills, Allegheny County, who also harvested a 398-pound antlerless elk on Nov. 6 in Grove Township, Cameron County.

Roe also noted that Jim Nyce, of Green Lane, Montgomery County, who was the successful bidder for the first-ever Elk Conservation Tag, harvested an antlered elk, as well. Nyce harvested a 6×6 on Oct. 14, in Benezette Township, Elk County. Nyce purchased the Conservation Elk Tag during the National Wild Turkey Federation’s national conference in early 2009, and was able to hunt from Sept. 1-Nov. 7.

Arianna’s dream was a South Dakota Merriam Turkey hunt and I am happy to report that we were successful in making her dream come true and that hunt will appear this month on our tv show Wired Outdoors.  While Arianna’s hunt ended with lots of smiles and great memories, unfortunately, Matthew Ciarlone, suffering from Leukemia, lost his battle before he had a chance to live his dream of a Midwest Elk hunt.  Obviously in circumstances like this, the Hunt Of A Lifetime organization has no choice but to move on to the next child waiting to go on their hunt.  So the money that we raised was put to good use and a little boy, Alex, was sent on his dream whitetail hunt in Alberta.

Like all the kids we raise money for, I find myself getting  emotionally attached to the children as well as their families.  When I received the call from Matthew’s father, Michael, that he had passed away, my heart was broken.  Being a father myself, I can’t imagine what Matthew’s family was going through.  For me, it was impossible to just move on and I knew that I had to do something, and I knew immediately what I wanted to do.

Like I mentioned before, Matthew’s dream was a midwest elk hunt so I knew that I wanted to offer Matthew’s father the opportunity to live out Matthew’s dream and harvest an elk in remembrance of Matthew.  I wasn’t going to be able to pull this off without some help.  So after a visit with one of the most well established elk hunting operations in the world, United States Outfitters, they didn’t hesitate and said, “Lets make this happen!”.

Now was the hard part, as I knew it was going to be very difficult for Matthew’s father to go on this hunt.  I put the call into Michael and asked him if he would like to go hunt and film with the goal of having a tv show that was dedicated to the memory of his son.  I could immediately hear the hesitation in Michael’s voice.  I told Michael “that it was entirely up to him and only he could decide if he wanted to do this, so think about it and give me a call in couple of weeks.”  About two days passed and Michael called me and said, “Matthew would kick my butt if I didn’t do this, so yes, I would like to go on the elk hunt.”

So plans were made and this trip would be muzzleloader hunt on October 9-14th in New Mexico at the Floyd Lee Ranch with United States Outfitters.  After arriving in New Mexico we would be staying at a very high elevation and hunting elk in some very rough terrain.  Michael being 62 and not used to hunting in these conditions was an absolute trooper.  Even though we knew he was really hurting, he got up every day and hunted hard walking and sometimes running after elk.  There was something deep within driving him on this hunt.  After hunting hard and having one miss, we found ourselves staring at the last few hours of the hunt.

That morning before the last hunt, Michael opened up to all the guests at camp and told them his story and all about his son Matthew.  There wasn’t a dry eye in the camp and some of the guests even had to get up and leave.  Michael explained to everyone how Matthew was his youngest son and his best friend.  They did everything together and especially loved being in the outdoors.  After hearing Michael open up and just how important this was, I found myself outside staring up at the clear blue sky in New Mexico, saying, “Dear lord, please make this happen for Michael.”

The last morning hunt we found ourselves walking in the woods and calling, but we didn’t hear a bugle all morning long.  Things were looking more and more bleak.  We were left with less that two hours to hunt when I spotted movement to our right about 150 yards in front of us.  The first elk was a cow, but there was not doubt that the second one was a bull.  Our guide Brian got Michael in place and confirmed that he was a shooter.   Michael took careful aim and let the Thompson Center bark!  We could tell the elk was hit, but couldn’t see where.  So our guide, Brian took off like an Olympic sprinter after this elk.  We could see the elk walking through the timber and Michael got in place for another shot.  The shot was about 70 yards and it didn’t look like he hit him.  Again, we were off after this elk and came upon him about 150 yards later laying down and unable to get up.  Michael got in place for a finishing shot at about 40 yards, which ended up being a clean miss. We moved Michael to about 25 yards for his fourth and final shot.

The elk was finally down and I can’t really describe the feeling that came over myself, our guide Brian, the cameraman Fran and Michael.  Again, there wasn’t a dry eye in the woods as Michael did his tv interview over the elk with the photo of his son Matthew in hand and said very simply, “This is for you Matthew!  I love you.”  Michael accomplished what he came to do even when there was nothing left in the tank.  He was emotionally and physically exhausted and had nothing left to give.  I am so proud of you Michael, you were truly an inspiration.

You may be asking what the title of this article, “Now I Know” means.  Last month I wrote an article, “Someone is Watching Out For Us” which is all about our success this year and how I feel there is someone watching out for the Wired Outdoors Team. After this hunt in New Mexico, “Now I Know” someone is watching out for us. After Michael fired his last shot, a revelation hit me in the face like a ton of bricks.  I said to Michael, “You know, we never shot your gun after arriving at camp.”  It was obvious that Michael’s gun was way off.  I personally know better and felt horrible for forgetting to shoot  Michael’s gun.

Now what one has to wonder is, how was Michael able to hit that elk from 150 yards away, but missed him from 40 yards.  The gun was off that much and it just doesn’t make any sense other than “Someone was watching out for us”.  It was perfectly clear to all those on the hunt, there was certainly some help from above.  That elk was sent our way for a reason and that shot found it’s mark miraculously from 150 yards away.  Sure it isn’t the biggest elk in the world, but that wasn’t what this hunt was all about.  This was Michael and Matthew’s elk and a hunt that I will never forget.  So many times people get wrapped up in the size of animals and that isn’t what we are all about.  I live for the experiences and moments that we make in the outdoors.  This is a memory that I will cherish the rest of my life, and hopefully will help the Ciarlone’s as they deal with the loss of their son Matthew.  I know that Matthew is smiling down on Michael and one VERY PROUD SON!

I won’t be redundant in the thanks to everyone involved with the September 19, 2009 3-D Benefit shoot. The preparation for the day was very time consuming. Once you see the outcome and the day comes to an end you can feel the relief and sensation of a task well done.

Personal Assessment of product
The most important thing to me when hunting from a hang on stand is comfort.  I believe, when spending long hours in a stand, comfort keeps me sharp when the moment of opportunity arrives.  The Millennium M100 is the most comfortable stand I’ve ever hunted. The comfort Tech Seat is made of Textline non-stretch fabric, which does not absorb water, and is quiet to the touch.
Another feature important to me is the weight and portability of a hang on stand.  The Millennium M100 only weighs 14 lbs. It has built in shoulder straps, and the ability to fold completely flat. This stand is a breeze to pack in, even on long trips.  The Millennium M100 stand attaches to the tree in a completely different manner than any other stand I’ve used.  From start to finish it took me less than 10 minutes using the Millennium M200 stick ladder and the M100 stand.  First, I hung the climbing sticks.  I then attached the receiver (shown in the picture above) to the tree by the chain included.  Then it was just a matter of sliding the male fitting on the stand into the quick mount receiver, and the stand was ready to hunt.  Another benefit to this system is that you can increase the value by purchasing and hanging several receiver mounts  in different areas.  Carry the stand with you and slide the stand into the receiver in place and hunt.  This allows you the mobility to hunt different areas with just one stand. The stand literally slides into the quick mount in seconds.

Recommendation
The ability to hunt several locations with the same fixed position stand is a great benefit and makes the Millennium M100 an incredible value.  I have never experienced the level of comfort and portability this stand provides and would recommend you to give it a try.

Bobcat guides may assist in all aspects of hunting or trapping bobcats, except for setting traps or harvesting bobcats. Similarly, elk guides may provide assistance in locating or tracking elk, and calling for elk, but they may not harvest an elk. Permit applications may be obtained from the Game Commission’s Harrisburg headquarters by calling 717-783-8164, or by contact any of the Game Commission’s six region offices.

The Board of Game Commissioners created the guide permit for bobcat and elk to allow experienced individuals, especially those who are familiar with or live in the WMUs open to bobcat harvest or the elk range, to serve as guides for those who receive a bobcat permit or elk license.

Guides are not required for those who only plan to accompany a bobcat permit holder or elk license recipient, or those who plan to aid a successful elk hunter to remove an elk from the field.

Since only properly licensed hunters may take part in the hunt, and since the agency is awarding only a limited number of bobcat permits and elk licenses, the guide permit enables those who receive a bobcat permit or elk license to take someone along to participate in the hunt without violating the law.

Those seeking elk guide permits also should consult with the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources concerning special guiding permits and requirements on state forest or state park lands.
