A journey to Pike County Illinois. World record bucks, monster long beards, waterfowl, morel mushrooms and Carter’s Trophy Hunting Lodge!

Teresa and I drove all night and arrived in a little town of Milton, Illinois. I pulled off the road and questioned a gentleman at the Post Office in an attempt to locate a gas station and of course a place to graze. The gentleman kindly smiled and pointed directly behind the vehicle and stated, “Well Dink’s Diner is the only place to eat in this town and the gas station across the street is open but not manned.” I thanked him and proceeded to the gas station.

To my surprise it is an UNMANNED gas station with no human beings present. The sign reads, “24 HOUR SERVICE,SWIPE YOUR CARD. IF NO PRESSURE , WAIT 30 SECONDS FOR THE PRESSURE TO BUILD UP AND PROCEED.” Talk about small town America. Population 300 SALUTE! After a few laughs we ventured about 10miles up the road to Pittsfield in hopes to find more resourceful accommodations. Little did we know, eating at Dink’s Diner is like eating Mama’s home cooking after over indulging there on a couple of occasions.

Pittsfield, Illinois is also home of Jeff Foiles Inc., and the Archery Shop. The only bow shop within 50 miles. After talking to a few of the patrons, this is the place to go for personal care of your bow and friendly staff!

Once we fueled up and found a place to eat we headed to Carter’s Trophy Lodge where we were greeted by Nathan Carter.

Once inside, I managed to pick my chin up off the floor and wipe the drool from my lip in astonishment of all the trophy mounts adorned on the walls. Nathan conducted a short safety briefing while checking Teresa’s license. Some casual conversation and we were escorted to our humble abode.

Once unloading all our gear we returned to the Lodge and met some of the hunters, our Guides Eddie and Randy.

Talk about resourceful, 8000+ acres owned or leased, 250 double hung stands, bow hunting only for MINIMUM 140 class whitetails. Escorted to the stand site strategically placed due to wind direction, food source and whitetail movement. A cameraman’s dream…double hung stands at every location to acquire the over the shoulder shot when presented.

Free range whitetails that are given an opportunity to mature only means one thing, MONSTER BUCKS! For you as the hunter, a chance to harvest a buck of a lifetime.

The first night in camp we took a ride with Randy to check out the property. Hopefully get some footage of bucks and/or buck activity. The deer trails look like cattle paths, fence posts and cedar trees are shredded and the bucks are chasing does. Shortly after admiring a few rubs we rounded the corner to encounter a buck tending a doe. An act of nature that most hunters never see in a lifetime of being afield. We were able to capture this act int he first hour with Carter’s Hunting Lodge. To a bow hunter this means the rut is near. Enabling multiple sightings of mature bucks and the ability for the hunter to prey on mother natures weakness of such an elusive animal. The desire to reproduce, forcing the most nocturnal animal to be seen within the guidelines of legal shooting hours. Making dreams come true.

With the camera in hand I attempt to capture the beauty and fruit of Dale Carter’s labor as he enables others to enjoy his passion and embrace their innermost desire. The thrill of a whitetail abound on the forest floor as one attempts to put a well placed shot with his or her bow on a buck of a lifetime. Stimulating an endorphin dump that over-rides the brain’s ability to remain calm and in control. Stabilizing a tiny pin on a minuet hair in hopes of silencing the pulsating heartbeat in ones head. Better known as BUCK FEVER! I call it heaven on Earth!

Everyday at camp the rut activity was getting more intense. A minimum of six bucks sighted up to eleven on our most active day. The Guides told us if you were here when the rut goes into full swing, peak rut…it is off the hook with buck sightings. Being from Pennsylvania hunting State Game Lands, eleven bucks in one day is virtually unheard of. I couldn’t imagine being suspended above the forest floor when the peak rut kicked off at Carter’s Hunting Lodge!

Most hunters I talk to that have taken a hunting trip have complained of not seeing doe and very few bucks. This was not the case. We saw plenty of doe and when you saw one running you could bet one thing. There was a buck in pursuit, grunting and growling behind her.

If you are looking for a hunt of a lifetime. I would sincerely recommend Carter’s hunting Lodge. Where not only could you shoot a buck of a lifetime, you will encounter a laid back friendly attitude an exemplified personal care from Dale Carter and his staff. It will make you want to take a road trip just to bring you back to the grass roots of our magnificent sport and those family traditions of camaraderie and fellowship in deer camp.

See Carter’s Hunting Lodge crew at the Eastern Sports and Outdoors Show and book your hunt of a lifetime!

I am happy to unveil this year’s highlight video from the 2009 Clarion County Youth Field Day. We are proud to be corporate sponsors of this event and bring this video to you. For more information on this day, visit Kyle’s blog with all the info. Click the VIDEO below!

I would also like to tell everyone a very special story that happened to us a few days ago at the Clarion County Youth Field Day banquet. Each year, Randy Culberson of Sportsman Outfitters and one of the organizers of the Clarion County Youth Field Day invites us to the annual event. Initially I was not going to be able to attend the event due to a scheduled hunt that we were filming. A phone call from the guide earlier in the week said he wanted to hold off that the birds just weren’t here yet. So a phone call later and I was off to Clarion County for the banquet.

Our buddy Sawyer – He is WIRED!

Some More Wired Fans!

At the banquet each year, Kyle Schwabenbauer, Co-Host Wired Outdoors, presents the highlight Youth Field Day video to all the guests. This year, Randy asked if we could also show our Hunt of A Lifetime videos that we did the past year. Once Kyle was done showing the highlight video I would be showing the Arianna video and Michael Ciarlone clip. (You can see both those videos at the bottom of this story) Before showing the videos Randy informed me that since we weren’t quite ready to begin our fund raising for this year’s Hunt of A Lifetime kids, he had come up with an idea just hours before. He purchased a small Christmas tree about three feet high and hung lottery tickets and a couple of gift certificates on the tree for decorations. He informed me that he was going to sell raffle tickets for the tree and donate all the money for our “Hunt Of A Lifetime” kids. I was very thankful and expressed my gratitude because any money we can raise is always appreciated it, but really didn’t know what to expect.

Amy Shoup from Strattanville, PA won the Hunt of a Lifetime raffle. It was a live Christmas tree filled with lottery tickets, $100 gift cert, $50 savings bond and a Traditions muzzleloader. Congrats Amy!!

After showing the Arianna video and the Michael Ciarlone clips there were a lot of folks who I could tell were really touched by our work. Shortly after the presentation, I had to get on the road as I had a 4 hour car ride and had to be at the airport the following morning to fly out to Illinois. About an hour down the road, I get a text from Kyle saying, “An anonymous donor just said they would match any money raised for the Hunt of A Lifetime kids.” About another hour down the road I get a call from Kyle saying, “How much money do you think they just raised for our kids?”, I replied, “I have no idea, maybe $500?” Kyle said, “Try $3600.00!” I was floored. There are not many times in my life where I don’t have something to say, I was truly speechless. In a year, when the economy is so bad to have folks open their hearts and wallets like that was truly humbling.

Clarion County Sportsmen for Youth raised over $3600 for Hunt of a Lifetime in less than two hours at their banquet. CCSFY President, Eric Black, presents Kyle with the money!! Thanks guys for everything!!!

I have so many things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving and they just keep rolling in. I would like to thank all the folks from the banquet who purchased tickets, to the anonymous donor, Randy Culberson and all the CCSFY committee members and the list goes on. Thank you again, I can’t say it enough and I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!!!

By Don Ott, Sportsmen Portal Field Staff

I won’t be redundant in the thanks to everyone involved with the September 19, 2009 3-D Benefit shoot. But as we know if it weren’t for those people that see the good in all people and the importance of God in our daily lives the world we live would be in worse condition. Without our sponsors and those of you who want to make a difference none of this would of been possible.

The preparation for the day was very time consuming. Once you see the outcome and the day comes to an end you can feel the relief and sensation of a task well done.

Once again there were many firsts as are with the great outdoors we all cherish so much. New friends, old acquaintances, first time shooters, young and old combating the same passion united as one, and smiles that will last a lifetime. Being blessed with the presence of Tina Pattison, Hunt of a Lifetime Founder, Arianna Evans one of our Hunt of a Lifetime children. Allowing the unknown person to experience the wow factor.

As I listened to so many people comment about the day and ask how to “Get WIRED”. They are pumped and now hopefully they ARE “WIRED”.

To those that weren’t able to attend you can still be apart of our wonderful family. Get involved, get “WIRED”, and continue your support. Thank you all for your kindness.

Take time to take a friend, loved one or a first timer and introduce them to our wonderful sport.

Come along on all our hunts, with live streaming video and photo uploads!

Unfortunately I haven’t spent much time in the woods this past month as the majority of my time has been spent in the office or production studio getting the tv show ready to go, WiredOutdoors.com. So I wanted to take this down time to give everyone an update on some very cool things we have going on.

Like the name of the show says, Wired Outdoors, we strive to bring all our friends and fans who are WIRED more than just a tv show. So we are pleased to announce a few new features that will allow you to come along on all our hunts. We now have a Facebook Fan page, facebook.com/wiredoutdoors. For those of you who don’t use facebook, you may ask, what does this offer that I don’t already have. First of all we are able to upload photos and video to our facebook fan page directly from our cell phones. This means instead of having to wait a year to see the show on tv, you can see it right now as it is happening. Our goal is on all our adventures to bring you and all our fans along with us.

This next feature is very cool, and it enables us to stream live video directly from our cell phones. At www.qik.com/wiredoutdoors you can watch all our live videos as we stream them from the field. As long as we have cell phone reception we will bring you live streaming video. If you have a twitter account you can follow us and get updates everytime we start streaming at www.twitter.com/wiredoutdoors.

So next month, myself, Kyle Schwabenbauer and Rob McCoy are leaving for our first ever Caribou hunt, September 8th, and we plan on taking you along during the trip and hopefully bringing you some live streaming video of some big old caribou! So again, join us on Facebook at facebook.com/wiredoutdoors and Twitter at twitter.com/wiredoutdoors and come along on all our hunts! GET WIRED!!

Welcome to our newest sponsor - Hunter Safety System!

We are proud to announce that Hunter Safety System is a new sponsor of the Sportsmen Portal team. For all of us at the Sportsmen Portal, safety in the treestand is a top priority and it should be for you too. We all have friends and family members who care about us and it isn’t worth falling out of a tree and ruining lives.

The new Pro Series Vest From Hunter Safety Systems

We couldn’t be happier to be working with a better group of guys and gals than those from the Hunter Safety System crew. We will be wearing their new Pro-Series vest all year long and reporting back to you. I have already had a chance to wear the new vest on my bear hunt and there is a reason that Hunter Safety System is number one in the market. They produce a superior product. The vests are streamlined with lots of pockets and by far the easiest vest to take on and off. They have also done a great job coating the buckle system to quiet them when in the stand.

By Don Ott, Sportsmen Portal Field Staff
I received a phone call from Jason Say asking if I would be available to film Arianna’s Hunt of a Lifetime. There would be a possibility I may have the opportunity to hunt Merriams in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It took no time for me to answer “Yes.” I hung up the phone and got online and ordered my Non-resident license and broke out my credit card. My tag cost only $85.00. I never dreamt that I would get to use it. Our main focus would be to get Arianna on film with her Merriam first, then possibly Jason. Being and avid turkey hunter I know the challenge we were about to face. All in one week, that’s a tall order.

Jason and I set out on public ground with the mindset that due to not being familiar with the area and having 8 to 10 inches of snow we would put on as many miles and cover as much terrain in an attempt to locate a few birds. In our course of travel we cut 5 sets of turkey tracks. Four of which were gobbler and one lonely hen track. I was thinking, “boy this doesn’t look too promising!” Although I did see three of the four gobblers. But like all weary birds they saw me as soon as I saw them and the “turkey scurry” commenced.

The Black Hills of South Dakota is very rocky with tall stands of Ponderosa Pines, not providing much ground cover. I decided to hunt above a peak of jagged rock that jetted out from the hillside on a bench that overlooked a mountain meadow. Earlier that morning, Jason and I watched 19 birds; two long beards, 8 jakes and 9 hens descend down the jagged rock point into the meadow below. They would respond to our calls, but had only one thing in mind. Getting to the food source. The snow was melting and the meadow was green.

I know we heard two dozen gobblers as the darkness faded and turned into daylight. But all we could do was sit and watch. I peered over my shoulder at Jason and stated, “it wasn’t going to happen”. This wasn’t something Jason was used to hearing. I think in a four day period I must of told him that a dozen times. He didn’t understand why and would respond with “Then let’s move and make it happen!” I would give him a look, shake my head and laugh. This time I stated, “You just can’t move when you have birds all around us and birds at 60 yards. We need to sit still; wait until they descend further down the mountain . We can depart and set up a make-shift blind. Then maybe we can work some magic!” We both agreed a blind needed to be built.

We erected a blind from downed timber and some pine limbs. Set out a hen and jake decoy 30 yards behind us up the hill. Hoping to have a bird focus on the decoys allowing Jason to get the camera ready. We no sooner got in the blind when I gave out a few series of yelps and purrs with my “Joanie Haidle Beard Bustin’ call” and one gobbled some 200 yards below. I called again and he cut me off. I looked at Jason and told him he was coming and to get ready.

One hour later, I see not one, but 8 gobblers strutting and chasing each other while calling violently to my calls. Finally with a few soft purrs, the birds turn and start our way. Approximately 25 minutes lapses and I hear wing beats and foot steps. Just some 30 yards below the point a big mature gobbler flies up into a tree and peers up toward our blind. He was attempting to see the hen that has been calling. I thought my heart would pound out of my chest!

At this point, Jason is getting tired of sitting and wants to move. I stated, “What? You can’t move! They will bust us again and it’s over!” I slowly bent forward to pick up my glass call and coming around the big rock 40 yards out was a mature gobbler. He sees something he didn’t like and turned to run. I stated to Jason, “To your right! Do you have the camera on him? I’m gonna have to take him!” I shot and crushed the bird! I couldn’t believe I had just harvested a beautiful Merriam on the last day we could hunt.

Jason will tell you he is a novice turkey hunter. After 35 years of hunting birds, I still consider myself to be a novice. Because every bird is different and I’m still learning.

In Jason’s defense, yes, we did get busted more times then we want to admit. But we really didn’t have time to conceal our setups due to running and gunning, and having so much success with our calling.
Best advice, patience and concealment. What a magnificient hunt!

Arianna Evans with the check for $6000.00

The Sportsmen Portal is proud to announce that we raised our goal of $6000.00 to send two very special kids on their Hunt of A Lifetime. This past weekend we presented a check to the founder of Hunt Of A Lifetime, Tina Pattison. The Sportsmen Portal is sending Arianna Evans from Northwest PA on a South Dakota turkey hunt and Alex Wilkinson from Western PA on a Canadian whitetail hunt.

From Left To Right Back Row: Deb Faith, Jim Faith, Tina Pattison, Bill Evans, Laura Evans, Jason Say.
Front Row: Arianna Evans

The day started off at East Coast Gun Sales in Duncansville, PA where we made the check presentation and then we were off to the Majestic World Lodge for dinner. I would like to thank the Majestic Lodge once again for opening up their gorgeous facilities to give us a fitting place for our dinner and presentations.

Front Row: Kyle Schwabenbauer, Arianna Evans, Jason Say

This event is always a special moment for the Sportsmen Portal team where emotions run high and this year was no different. The team and their families had an opportunity to hear directly from the founder of Hunt Of A Lifetime, Tina Pattison, on why and how she began the organization. I won’t attempt to put her story into words, I would never do it justice, but it is a story that pulls at your heart leaving not a dry eye in the room. Tina truly is a remarkable person who has founded a remarkable movement. We are privileged to be involved with Hunt of A Lifetime.

It is always a family affair this day and my buddy Nate Bell wanted to hop in for a photo.

We took some time to recognize that this year we lost one of our own, a young man who loved to hunt, Matthew Ciarlone, to leukemia and his dream was to go on an elk hunt. I made the announcement that the Sportsmen Portal will be taking Matthew’s father, Michael Ciarlone, to New Mexico this October to live out Matthew’s dream. I had the opportunity and pleasure of meeting the entire Ciarlone family last week and all I can say is what a wonderful, loving family. I can’t wait to take his dad on this hunt and dedicate the trip to his son. There will be much more on this story later on.

The Entire Sportsmen Portal Team with Arianna

As I mentioned before, Arianna and her entire family joined us for the day. It does not take long to understand why so many people talk about this little girl and how she touches lives. She is an absolute sweetheart and we are thrilled to be sending her on her dream hunt. She is also VERY excited for her turkey hunt and myself as well as a cameraman will be tagging along at the end of April to film the entire event for our show. So this story is far from over.

We presented our 2nd annual Sportsmen Portal Hero award;

Each year the Sportsmen Portal awards a special young person with the Sportsmen Portal Hero. This award goes to very special person who loves the great outdoors. While many of us may take for granted our ability to go outside, it is people like you Arianna who remind us to appreciate all of the time we spend in the woods. For this Arianna we are truly grateful to you for the love and dedication you have for hunting and fishing. This year’s Sportsmen Portal Hero is Arianna Evans!

I would personally like to thank all the families, the Mickles (last years recipient), Evans, Ciarlones, and Wilkinsons from the bottom of my heart for allowing us to be touched by you and your children. Like I have said in previous articles, my mom has one wish in life, and that was that her children grew up to be good people. Nothing else really mattered, and I know I became a better man for just hugging Arianna, shaking hands with Timmy Mickle and spending the evening eating dinner with the Ciarlones. So again, to all those families who have graciously allowed the Sportsmen Portal team into their lives, WE THANK YOU. Please take this with you, it is not us who are benefiting you with a monetary check, but you and your families who benefit all of us at the Sportsmen Portal.

The entire Sportsmen Portal Team with Arianna Evans and Tina Pattison

In a time when you sometimes find yourself wondering if there are good people out there, this event from beginning to end is a great reminder to me that when the chips are down and someone needs your help there are so many good people who step up. I first and foremost would like to recognize and thank the field staff, Kyle Schwabenbauer, Teresa Patterson, Rob McCoy, Mike Bell, Don Ott, Fran Rodenbaugh, Andy Traister and AJ Johnson for all their hard work as they were the ones who raised the money. I would like to thank our main sponsor, Jim and Deb Faith of East Coast Gun Sales for always providing whatever we need to make these special events happen. Randy Culberson of Sportsmen Outfitters in Knox, PA who donated a gun to the raffle, the Clarion County Sportsmen For Youth, Medalist Hunting Clothing, Eric Richards of Coveted Waters who donated a guided fishing trip, Leighty’s Rugged Outdoor and Plano.

The entire Sportsmen Portal Team with Arianna Evans, Arianna’s Parents Bill and Laura, and Tina Pattison

I know I will probably forget some, but I also wanted to thank and list the folks who pitched in and helped us sell tickets, Steve Howard, Frank McNany, Rex Fahr, Eric Say, Kirk Byerly, Chris McCormick, Gary Bickel, Frank Litavish and Walter Strohl. Most of all, thank you to all who pitched in and purchased a raffle ticket!

Thank you to the following companies who contributed cash and resources! Your contribution was most generous and heartfelt. Thank you from the entire PSP team.
