All In The Name Of Scent Control

Learning to hunt with his father and grandfather in Clarion County as a boy, he now travels all over the state in pursuit of whitetail with his bow and rifle. Jason is also an avid fly fisherman and having roots in Western PA and now living in Eastern PA, he loves to fish all the streams in between.

Every year it never fails that my wife is going to be very upset with me in mid-September.  This occurs mainly for one reason and it is all in the name of scent control.  Due to the fact that my wife is due with our second child on October 28th (I know, horrible timing for a archery hunter), I convinced her to let me head out to hunt with my good friend John Bulgrin of Wisconsin Outdoor Adventures.  The archery season in Wisconsin began September 15 and this will give me a chance to do some serious hunting before the baby gets here.

Every year as many of you will agree, you have to do your inventory, get all your clothes out, seperate your cold weather, scent free clothes, different camo, warm weather, etc.  Dedicate another room for equipment, including treestands, boots, bows, arrows, releases, etc.  Then comes the equipment that goes in your backpack including, rattle bag, grunt, doe bleat, rangefinder, head light, small flash light, drag rope, knife, tracking tape, bow rope, windicator, etc.

Scent Free Bags
All clothes stores in H.S. Scent Proof Bags

Anyway, you get the idea, but what I think upsets my wife the most is my compulsion with scent control.  All of my clothes are stored in different Hunter Specialties Scent proof bags and kept in large plastic crates when not in use.  I have one bag for my Medalist scent protection clothing and the other bags are for the clothes that I will keep earth wafers in. Just let me tell you right now, if anyone ever needed something to drive women away, earth wafers are the answer.

Taking Clothes out of the Dryer
All clothes right from the dryer into my scent proof bags.

This smell that we all as archery hunters have grown to love, as we directly relate it to sitting in the tree and hunting whitetail, does not have the same effect on the Mrs’s. Also, she loves it when I bust out the H.S. Dryer sheets and use them in her dryer.  Even though she is well aware that the smell is not going to get on her clothes, she seems to insist every year that I am somehow destroying the dryer and it has been forever tainted with the smell of dirt!  (Sounds like a good thing to me??)

Scent-a-way Products
Hunter Specialties Products – Laundry Detergent, Dryer Sheets, Shampoo and Deodorant

I also shower before every hunt with HS Scent-a-Way products religiously and use the HS deodorant.  My wife finds the whole thing quite amusing and loves to tell her friends how I wash my clothes with dirt detergent and dry them with dirt dryer sheets.  I guess to those who don’t have this obsession the whole ritual would appear quite amusing, but that is why we all know that they JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND!

Well I am off to Wisconsin on Saturday, September 22 and will be hunting by that evening.  I hope to come back with a great journal entry.
