Raystown Striper

Big Stripper
Big Striper

By Jeremy Fisher, Lewistown, Pennsylvania On April 30th of this year my cousin and I headed to Lake Raystown for a night of throwing plugs at the bank in hopes of catching striper and walleye.  We arrived at the lake a little before dark and were throwing jigs to catch bass and panfish while waiting for it to get dark. About a half hour before dark, I noticed fish blowing up on the surface towards the point of the bank we were fishing.  As wegot closer to the point we realized that it was a school of striper blowing up on baitfish.  We dropped the bass and panfish rods and picked up rods that were rigged with topwater striper plugs.  The very first cast, I caught about a 15 lb striper.  The second cast i hooked up with one that was much larger.  After about a ten to fifteen minute fight I finally landed my largest striper on artificial. The fish was 40 1/2 inches long and weighed 30 pounds.  Two casts later I missed another striper that was bigger yet and my cousin caught one that was around 10 pounds.  Thirty minutes after spotting the fish they were gone.  This striper is my largest on artificial and my second largest overall.  Second to a 31 pounder that I caught on live bait when I was twelve (1989).
