By Scott Weller, Venago County Resident
Scott Weller of Venago County takes this nice 5×5 elk in Western Colorado with his 58 cal. Hawkin Muzzleloader.

I was stalking along a dark timber ridgeline doing some cow calling. After a series of calls, I heard twigs snapping down over the ridge to my left. I called again and the noise was getting closer. All of a sudden, there was a bull elk staring at me at 50 yards. Luckily, I was behind a small spruce tree and the elk couldn’t see me. I made another call and the bull turned sideways. I could see he was a legal bull, so I fired. After tracking him, I put another one in him to put him down for good.
